Disco Butterflies

Installation along 3rd Avenue

Seattle Washington

One day my friend Paul said I could have a blank wooden panel to draw on. I was excited. I said yes, and he said there were some conditions. The theme needed to include flowers, connectivity and butterflies as the panel was to be installed along third avenue for a street beautification project. Immediately I thought about how neat it would be to have a Dj butterfly party. The moon reaching out his hand to check the speakers base while the sun, now finally off of work, stands below. A butterfly bouncer checks the ID of a moth, two butterflies dance near a flower while two more lounge in the Green Room. A disco ball spins above. Bathrooms to the left while to the right one can grab a drink of nectar at the bar. Stars streak by as dusk slips away. Colors pop.

Street art is important especially when the presented works are meant to connect with those on the streets the most. I feel music along with the sun, moon, and stars are inherently loved. Butterflies, I'm not entirely sure. It might anger people with such a bold signal of beauty when they're fighting to survive. The homeless and taggers spend the most time near this art at the moment. Theres a respect that goes into adding art to a street that the city might fail to realize. Spots are earned and you can't just "beautify" a street while sweeping over and out a problem. While painting in ally ways the other homeless come up and say they too love the colors, that the image I'm creating brings them joy. Soon my image will be tagged on and become another collaborative art piece full of the voices needing expression. Nothing lives forever. I think Seattle is on the right track with art, and will be soon in other aspects too.
